When I first began painting, I intuitively painted red alot. Not really knowing why, until I studied what the meaning of red was. I was just releasing memories of childhood abuse as I painted. The first chakra, called either the ROOT or BASE chakra is associated with the color red and the adrenal glands. "It's qualities and functions are full acceptance of life on earth, survival, power to achieve goals, vitality, grounding, satisfaction, material security, stability, primal trust, stillness, courage." I needed to integrate so many of these qualities at the time--and painting red truly helped.
